Although The Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (a.k.a BABoK) is now considered the bible of business analysis worldwide, I can argue that Karl Wiegers’ “Software Requirements v3” should be dubbed as the survival guide for earnest IT Business Analysts. The BABoK has been written by different authors to be a comprehensive and horizontal framework on the subject, and I can say that its third version is much handy than the older one in terms of the logical soundness of the BA practice. However, Wi...more

Been a BA for about 20 years. Best book on this topic I have read.
If I was teaching a class on the documentation artifacts that a BA uses in a typical waterfall style SDLC this would be THE book. If you are not looking for that topic in particular this book might be a 4(or possibly even 3) stars.
First the good things.
- Excellent discussion and overview of all the major requiremetns documentation artifacts that are used today.

Has many important points on requirements development and capture. But I feel that it could be more concise.

I'm new to requirements analysis/business analysis, but not new to tech - I'm a career tech writer who was hired to write documentation and requirements, the only person in either role at a small company. I needed something more than the Pragmatic Institute training I was sent to and something more than the agile party line on requirements (document requirements as you go and just enough, not too much - less is more unless it's not enough). After reading this cover to cover, it's geared mainly a...more
LONG but very informative.
I started with an actual book and traded up for a kindle copy - knowing it would be such a valuable resource, I wanted a digital copy...turns out the digital copy was better to read!

Still a good guide for situations where greater rigour in requirements development and management is merited. The tone of the second edition felt noticeably better. This book is good to have on the shelf when I need to write a SRS. This book coupled with Agile Software Requirements: Lean Requirements Practices for Teams, Programs, and the Enterprise cover most requirements challenges on the projects in which I generally end up.

Actually I'm not a SA and can rate this book just from developer's position.
This book fully covers the topic of requirements analysis and helped me to delve into this step of software development lifecycle.

Worth reading. The book does a good job of capturing the method, process and content of requirements capture. One area I would expand upon is agreement and consensus. Requirements have to be captured and as part of this process we have to build consensus and agreement around them. If you are looking for an excellent reference on requirements capture - this is a good source.

If you are looking for a practical guide into what software requirements are, how to craft them, and what to do with them, then look no further than Software Requirements. This usable and readable text walks you through exactly how to approach common requirements-related scenarios. The incorporation of multiple stories, case studies, anecdotes, and examples keps it engaging to read.

Karl Weigers is the accepted master when it comes to requirements definition. This book adds to his first by covering the process of requirements gathering and all the detail of quality analysis and specification. It is a craft that is easy to do badly but difficult and demanding to do well. This book is a valuable addition to the practice.

A wonderful book for anyone who wants to start his/her career as a business analyst. It guides you, step-by-step, how to create a good-enough requirement. This book also provides a lot of example and story that will keep your focus.

I only got to read part of this while writing some requirements for a current project at work. I really would have preferred some more specific examples, and I tried skimming/flipping looking to see if they existed elsewhere in the book, but I wasn't able to find what I needed.

Pretty good, many interesting topics covered, even risk management to some extent.
But I'd prefer it to be more laconic.
